Brownie

Brownies are small humanoids ranging from 1.5 to 2 feet tall. Some believe them to be distant relatives of Halflings and Pixies, while others trace them to a direct branch from ancient fey. They are shy and reclusive though quite helpful to those they deem worthy and trust. The original Brownie settlements were on Daraghan, the largest of the Serpent Isles. The island itself is somewhat of a mystery and ancient texts refer to this island as a place where the barriers that separate the planes are thinner than on other places. Daraghan is also a place of great natural beauty with lush groves and sparkling waterfalls.

In the late 1300s, the Brownie lands of Daraghan were trampled. Some tellings lay the blame at the feet of Bloodstone's troops, while others blame careless adventurers hunting for treasure, but they all speak of metal and fire. The Brownies, unable to resist, fled to new areas across Layonara. While a few determined individuals have taken to adventuring to find a secure new homeland or a way to regain what was once their lands, most have formed small communities, keeping to the wooded areas.

Personality:
Brownies are often lawful and as such are quite honest to the core. They are gatherers, taking wild fruits and cultivated food from near-by farms. They will observe a family's farm and if the family meets their moral standards, they will adopt the family and help them out. When they take food others have worked to grow they will trade chores. They may milk a farmer's cow, and take a small bit of milk for themselves. They often perform other small chores such as mending clothes and repairing items. Brownies prefer to do this unnoticed and if the farmer boasts of a Brownie helping him, they will quit and move on.

Strangers are watched closely and generally distrusted. If they are determined to be harmless they are left in peace, otherwise the community will unite and drive the intruder out.

Physical Description:
Brownies are tiny, even compared to a Halfling. They range from 1.5 to 2 feet tall and usually have brown hair and blue or green eyes. They favor brightly colored garments though tend towards greens and browns when traveling to better blend into the forest.

Relations with other races:
Brownies prefer to live alone and keep contact with other races to a minimum. While they do help those they feel are good, they prefer to do so unnoticed. They hate evil creatures and attack and drive out any that enter their home.

Alignment: Not evil, not chaotic. Often lawful.

Religion: Brownies worship Prunilla.

Language:

  • Common
  • (a somewhat ancient dialect of) Halfling

Player characters must have a minimum intelligence of 12 to be fluent in another language.

Names:
Brownie names tend to be very similar to Halfling and Pixie names.

Adventurers:
Brownie adventurers are very rare. A Brownie adventurer often is doing so for a specific purpose. Some have taken to adventuring to find new lands to settle and also to find help in regaining their homeland in the Serpent Isles.
