Eastspirit Fort: History and Rumors

The fort has been the only place where open hostilities have almost occurred between the feuding neighbors due to the unclear wording by the dominus when the dominion was divided. This left an imprecise delimitation of the frontier in that region. On first interpretation, the fort and nearby woods were all to belong to the Driran Kingdom. However, after an appeal to a council of Dragonsong judges, as the Dominus is not allowed to decide on his own decrees, the decision was reversed to favor the Dominion. By then, though, the fort had already been occupied.

The Dominus, conscious of his error, pursued a diplomatic resolution to the dilemma seeing that he was forced to take back what he had intended to give away. The day after the tribunal's decision, an order was sent to Valerius Laenas, his field general at the time, to muster the army and march to Eastspirit Fort. Valerius was told to camp just outside the defenses of Eastspirit Fort and take no hostile action, while awaiting his orders and instructions from the Dominus.

A tense standoff ensued as the Dominion's troops revealed themselves to the Drirans that held the fort. The fort's guardians harassed the men by catapulting barrels of waste in their direction and even the occasional rotting animal; even so, the Dragonsong army stood their ground until orders from the Dominus arrived. When they did, they instructed Valerius to have his army storm the fort early the next day and occupy it, advancing no further. Morning came and the highly trained men were ready for the push; no weapons were made ready except ladders and a large ram born by the biggest men in the legion. A war cry tore the air as the last 200 yards were covered in a rush to avoid arrows and bolts'both of which were not seen. As the furious charge threw the ram through the gate, it swung open, revealing an empty fort, deserted with haste during the night for the embers of the campfires were still warm.

The men cried victory as they occupied the fort. Dragonsong had triumphed in claiming what was theirs, and Driran was dealt its first defeat.
Since that day, many of those involved in the siege have raised suspicions that the siege and invasion were coordinated between the Dominus and Elena of Driran to allow him to save face after his decision to divide the lands.
