Shell Lake has many of the hallmarks of a beach estuary rather than those features typical of a lake. While the water is never quite as salty as the ocean that on occasion spills into it, the lake still has a high salt content. As such, it contains creatures and sea life that has either been washed into it or has made its way through the gaping cracks in the steep limestone walls that surround the lake. While none can remember a time before the lake was present on the island, it was most likely formed long ago by the River of Depths. It is believed that the river, having carved its way across the island to this point, slowly eroded the natural depression in the land until its waters had formed a deep crater. Something is then suspected to have caused the river to alter its course, and at a point several statute miles from the Shell Lake, the River of Depths now plunges underground once again.
