This is the only area of the island where the land plunges below sea level. Natural cracks in the limestone allow sea water to flow into this lake at times of very high tides. As a result the Shell Lake is quite salty. The beach around the crater-like lake is white, the sediments composed of centuries' worth of crushed shells.
