Like its Northern cousin, the Southern Polar Ocean is a cold and forbidding place. To fall into these waters means instant death from exposure to the cold; sailing this ocean is as hazardous as it is in the north. The masts of ships become wet with sea spray that quickly freezes in the subzero temperatures, and if this sea ice is not constantly chipped away, a vessel can become top heavy and risk capsizing - and the quick deaths of its crew.
